Android Development for Healthcare Industry

images2

Healthcare research firms have recently found that choosing a mobile platform, like Android OS that today powers world’s half of the smartphones, to provide healthcare services have great potential to redefine the medical industry and traditional bonds between doctors and patients. Now both healthcare service providers and consumers are discovering the benefits of Android based healthcare applications to acquire best medical information, support and care.

Android has given new dimension to the global smartphone market. Android is a free OS and anybody can use it on an Android-compatible device. This encourages developers to build high performance smartphone apps at lowest possible prices. It further increases the market of smartphones and allows none-smartphone users to have smartphone in budget. The practice of using smartphones for health related services and information is known as mHealth. mHelath is made of two words: Mobile and Health. In this way, mHealth apps let you manage and improve health. You allow these apps to collect your information and then to process the information to get results respectively. Android in this context has thousands of free and paid applications that are serving to a variety of healthcare issues. You just think about a healthcare issue and find a suitable free or paid app on Google Play’s Android apps store.

Not only consumers are taking advantages of Android healthcare apps but healthcare professionals such as doctors, clinicians, and nurses are using these mHealth apps to trace patients’ histories, appointment schedules, drug prescription details, billing data, and other practice related information. Medscape, for example, is a popular healthcare Android development and it is mostly used by physicians, medical students, nurses and other healthcare professionals for clinical information.

Epocrates is another great outcome of Android development providing reliable drug, disease, and diagnostic information at the point of care. This Android app is the number one mobile drug reference among U. S. physicians. Using this app, physicians can access to thousands of drug monographs, drug-drug interaction checker, pill identifier, and health plan formularies.

Medical companies are now recognizing the potentials of Android mobile applications and are hiring Android development companies to get their apps developed. They are allocating budgets and investing in development of medical applications for smartphone devices and tablets PCs. When exploring Google Play’s Android app segment, you can find hundreds of thousands of healthcare and medical apps. And each app serves to a specific purpose and solves a problem related to health or medical.

Mobile can provide real time access to medical records of patients. It can also track their physical state and medical history and provide them instructions about diet and nutrition related aspects. Android has largest share in the market thus an Android based healthcare app is going to benefit a largest group of people.

How to Maintain Healthy Joints

How to Maintain Healthy Joints*

Joints are where bones, connective tissue and cartilage all come together in your body to promote movement. Your joint support system is responsible for sustaining the area around muscles and bones, where they provide shock absorption and support your internal structure.

There are many ways to encourage healthy joint function, like maintaining a healthy weight and enhancing your diet with well-established joint care supplements like Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM.*

As one of the most scientifically studied joint health ingredients available today, Glucosamine is naturally found within the joints, making it the ideal supplement for supporting healthy joints and connective tissue.* Glucosamine comes in two forms, Hydrochloride, and Sulfate, and lubricates the joints to improve mobility and flexibility.* Chondroitin is a naturally occurring nutrient found in connective tissue; in supplement form, it helps revitalize cartilage and support the structural framework of joints.* MSM is a natural form of sulfur, one of the raw materials for collagenwhich plays a key role in promoting healthy connective tissue.* MSM also synergistically enhances the benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin to support healthy cartilage.*

Maintaining a healthy weight for your height can help promote healthy joints and comfortable movement, since every extra pound you carry on your frame puts four times the stress on your knees.1

The health of your joints goes hand in hand with enjoying comfortable, easy movement as you age. As of 2006, about 46 million Americans which is nearly 1 in 5 adults have cause for concern when it comes to healthy joint function.2 Additionally, women are more likely than men to have concerns about their joint health; and the likely culprit is wearing high heel shoes. Research shows that wearing shoes with a three-inch heel can put seven times the amount of stress on your joints than shoes with a one-inch heel. 3,4

How To Live A Healthy Lifestyle And Enjoy Life

images20

Living a healthy life style naturally calls for a healthy body, free from disease and illnesses. It also means that you enjoy a positive outlook about your life, the people in it, and the world.

A healthy lifestyle is one full of energy, without constant stress about aches and pains, and what tomorrow will bring. It’s about living in a healthy body, and enjoying the world around you.

Living a healthy lifestyle is built on these foundational steps:

Staying healthy calls for a healthy diet

A diet rich in fresh, whole foods is essential in a healthy lifestyle. When available, always choose foods found in its natural state. Fruits and vegetables have high vitamin and mineral content. Whole grains like quinoa and whole wheat bread should be consumed instead of less nutritious white varieties.

Vegetables need to make up 50-60% of your total intake of food each and every day. The more vegetables you eat, the less sugar and white flour you will crave and your immune system will help you fight off illness and give you all the energy you need.

Drink plenty of water. The old suggestion of 8 glasses as day is still what you need to keep every cell in your body healthy.

Exercise keeps your heart healthy and your body agile.

Just 30 minutes a day of movement can benefit your health by improving joint stability, increase your range of movement and flexibility, help prevent osteoporosis and fractures and improve your mood while reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Exercise doesn’t necessarily mean joining a gym. It can be simple things like turning off the TV for an hour and playing outdoors with your kids or taking your dog for a walk.

If you already exercise regular, add an extra lap in the pool, walk an extra turn around the block, do one more set of reps before quitting. Small increases can make a big difference.

Chores like shoveling snow, gardening, raking leaves or vacuuming and sweeping the floor are all considered a form of exercise.

Emotional Health makes all the pieces come together

Your emotional health plays a big part in a healthy lifestyle. Tune into your body to learn what causes you stress. Have a healthy social life by avoiding negative people and situations. Relaxation and meditation help release negative emotions. Listen to soothing music, meditate, breathe deep to help reduce stress.

A healthy lifestyle makes life full and large

In addition to an overall good feeling, a healthy lifestyle has many benefits. A healthy lifestyle makes life worth something to you. When you’re living conscious of your diet, sleep, exercise, and the other people you share the world with, life will take on a new and profound meaning.

A naturally healthy lifestyle can lead to a longer more productive life. You’ll feel less pain, ward off diseases and have energy like you did when you were young.

Tax Implications of the Affordable Health Care for America Act

images6

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed HR3962: the Affordable Health Care for America Act of 2009. The legislation is thousands of pages long, making it difficult for regular taxpayers to understand how the bill will affect them.

Tax Penalties

The new legislation is very expensive, and Congress has come up with a number of ways to pay for it. First of all, there will be a shared responsibility provision that basically forces taxpayers who cannot establish acceptable health care coverage to pay an additional 2.5% tax. There will be a hardship exception though, for taxpayers who cannot afford to pay the tax.

Payroll Penalty

In addition to a penalty on taxpayers who cannot afford coverage, the government will also assess an 8% payroll tax on businesses that do not offer health insurance to their employees. However, it is widely expected that the penalty will be reduced to 5% when the Senate revises the bill.

Millionaire Surtax

One of the largest sources of funding for the reform bill is a new surtax on individuals making more than $500,000 per year, of couples making over $1 million. In the House’s bill, beginning in 2010 all taxpayers making a qualifying amount will be subject to a massive 5.4% tax increase.

Inflation Increases

In addition to adding heft tax increases, the bill also partially repeals tax indexing for inflation. This will result in more money for the Federal government as the years go by. According to the Joint Tax Committee the surcharge is only expected to generate $30.9 billion in 2011, but nearly $70 billion in 2019.

Passage into Law?

The present version of this bill is not likely to get passed into law. Despite President Obama’s optimistic stance, some Senators are already pronouncing the bill dead on arrival. Although there has been a lot of discussion about this health care reform bill, it could be months before even a highly amended version of it becomes law. The Senate is not going to vote on the bill until at least 2010, and since they are expected to make numerous modifications it will likely need to return to the House for another vote. It could be six months from now before a health care bill goes to President Obama’s desk for a signature.

Feeling healthier can be as simple as changing your diet and exercise routines simply walk to work instead or set up an exercise regime to improve your fitness levels. In terms of foods, ensure that you are eating the right type to suit the season salads and fruits are best for the summer, whilst vegetables, soups and hearty foods are perfect for colder climates. Whilst chocolate and other junk food need not be completely cut out, it should certainly be cut down on everything in moderation.

Happiness is a bit harder to achieve as it is often out of our control, but there are a number of ways to aid you on your way to feeling happier it can be anything from a change of job (if youre feeling dissatisfied) to a vacation abroad or even practiced through meditation. Obviously, many will struggle to simply feel happy, and if you really cannot see yourself feeling this way, it would certainly help to speak to someone about it.

Medical Office Assistant And Pharmacy Technician Courses For Fast Healthcare Careers

health5

Becoming a pharmacist or a doctor is a serious educational commitment that takes several years. Especially in light of the almost decade long, immensely expensive process of becoming a doctor, healthcare careers can feel out of reach for many people. But becoming a physician is not the only option for healthcare hopefuls. Aside from nursing, two other prominent healthcare professions are medical office assistant and pharmacy technician. Lets have a closer look.

Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technician training has to prepare the student for the crucial role of assisting pharmacists conduct their duties. Most people know about the drug dispensaries found in commercial stores and hospitals, but theres also a role for pharmacy technicians in medical research, third party insurers and drug manufacturing. Regardless of where the technician takes a job, your training will focus on a strict and accurate understanding of measurement, dispensing systems and drug effects. Though you will have the supervision of a pharmacist, patient safety depends on your ability to provide exactly the dose prescribed, and youll also have a chance to make sure theyre receiving the right medication and get to work directly with clients, including calling them to ensure medications are being taken as directed.

Programs are usually provided through vocational schools and colleges, with a length averaging around a year, but some programs allowing completion in less time. Like any healthcare professional, you will have liability insurance and accredited programs are offered in most provinces in Canada. 43% are employed in hospitals or similar facilities, and pharmacist shortages have seen a recent boom in the demand for people with pharmacy technician training, making it a reliable choice for steady and rewarding work.

Medical Office Assistant

In Canada, the role of the medical office assistant is somewhat more abbreviated than your American cousins, because of provincially regulated Medicare instead of a byzantine network of private insurers, but theres still a strong demand for people with medical office assistant training. As well as clerical work, including working with sensitive and confidential medical records and calling patients to remind them of scheduled appointments, medical office assistants receive some front line medical training to help them understand the ins and outs of their patients needs.

One part secretarial and receptionist training, and one part anatomy and health lessons, medical office assistant training is also mostly found through career or vocational schools and community colleges. Like pharmacy technician programs the study time is short. Particular to the program the administrative side of the training also makes graduates flexible, with options to work outside the healthcare industry. If you do decide to stick with healthcare you could find yourself at the front desk of a private practice or part of a team in the medical record archives of a large hospital.

Why Vegetarians Are Less Healthy

health18

Roughly, about 6% of the world’s population is vegetarian, a trend that is growing. Yet study after study shows that vegetarians are less healthy than their non-vegetarians peers. Why is this so? Surely a diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables should make you healthier, not less healthy, so what’s going on?

In the light of extraordinary new research it is becoming apparent that most vegetarians are in fact less healthy than their non-vegetarian peers. By “peers” I mean people of a similar socio-economic and cultural background. Any valid comparison between vegetarians and non-vegetarians must compare apples with apples. For example, any study that compared an affluent health-conscious vegetarian from California with an impoverished meat eater from the slums of Calcutta is not likely to be meaningful.

Recent studies are clearly showing that compared to their non-vegetarians peers, vegetarians are more at risk of diseases such as infertility, cancer, heart disease, eating disorders, mental disease, and obesity.

Several studies have compared health-conscious vegetarians with health-conscious non-vegetarians from the same demographic (the same socio-economic, health-conscious cohort). In other words, scientists have compared vegetarians and non-vegetarians from similar backgrounds so as to validate the results and they have come up with some surprising conclusions.

For example, in a study of 76,000 people conducted over many years data from five studies were pooled into a very large collaborative analysis of mortality in vegetarians and non-vegetarians (Appleby PN, Key TJ, Thorogood M, Burr ML, Mann J. Mortality in British vegetarians. Public Health Nutr. 2002 Feb;5(1):29-36).

The Appleby Study compared vegetarians and non-vegetarians, adjusted for age, sex and smoking. The results for all-cause mortality showed no significant difference between vegetarians and their non-vegetarian peers. Many studies have shown that vegetarians live longer than the population at large, but the Appleby Study showed that this is not the case when you compare people within the same demographic. The study concluded that ‘Overall mortality was the same between vegetarians and non-vegetarians. But vegetarians had 2.2 times the death rate from mental and neurological diseases as non-vegetarians.’

Several studies have compared vegetarians and non-vegetarians within the same demographic and the research is clearly showing that vegetarians are at greater risk of heart disease, cancer, infertility and other diseases. As most studies have compared vegetarians with the population at large, this is not widely known; such studies provide a false picture because the population at large is not particularly health-conscious.

This begs the question: does this mean that eating animal products is good for health? The research on the whole says NO. So if vegetarians are less healthy than their non-vegetarian peers, what is the reason? Why is it that vegetarians are less healthy than their non-vegetarians peers in the same demographic? This is the vegetarian paradox.

Health Care Reform And Depression On The 4th Of July

images

We are in the middle of 2010 gearing up for fireworks; waiting for the new health care reform law to take effect. Eleven state attorneys general said they wanted to challenge the law as being unconstitutional and the Democrats are still talking about passing amendments. Moreover, there are many questions that remain unanswered; the biggest of which is, Will it make health care more effective? The obvious answer is no. This entire scenario is one big shell game. There are thousands of pages of new law and most of the law makers are clueless.

The reality check is that the Congress has passed this bill with a three year delay in implementation, so it was designed to change nothing for the immediate future with the hope that after three years, with no one paying attention anymore, the administration can sneak a few changes in to implement its socialist agenda. Meanwhile, we as a society still have the same health issues in a system that continues to thrive on treatment rather than prevention. One prime example is depression and anxiety. People naturally become depressed in the kind of severe economic downturn that we are experiencing with increased anxiety about a future that looks bleak. Medical insurance, health insurance or some type of managed care health plan seems irrelevant when facing unemployment. In a depressed economy, with massive anxiety and depression plaguing the population there is a serious public health problem. This kind of insidious upheaval leads to other chronic diseases like, diabete3s, high blood pressure, heart attack and the like.

The generally accepted treatment however, is for the pharmaceutical companies to make billions of dollars selling anti-depressants and tranquilizers. Moreover, aside from monetizing human responses to stressful stimuli, there is a political benefit to having massive numbers of citizens living in chemically induced altered realities. People on Prozac are less likely to protest against nefarious political agendas. Therefore, what motivation does the government have to reform health care to the extent that people will have better access to professional counseling for coping with and resolving their struggles?

In conclusion, as we throw a few slabs of meat on the barbecue grill and sip some beer on this 4th of July we need to realize that there are a few avenues toward seizing power and control that the founding fathers could not anticipate. The constitution is a wonderful document and has saved our republic from despotism enumerable times in our 214 year history. However, it is subject to interpretation and we know from experience that Supreme Court justices take opposite views of what is or is not constitutional depending upon whether they are liberal or conservative. Therefore, we need to be diligent in letting our political leaders know that we are not as stupid as they think. We need to consistently remind them that they work for us. That is why freedom of speech is still the most important constitutional amendment.
